Art group going under

Creative Wilmington, a non-profit group dedicated to showcasing and promoting the arts in the Port City, will dissolve by the end of this year. Board members say they were reluctant to make the call, but due to economic conditions, they can’t pay a new full-time director.

Creative Wilmington allows local artists to post their work and upcoming events. It’s also the force behind those sculptures you see around Mayfaire and Downtown Wilmington.

Dan Brawley, who heads the Cucalorus Film Festival, says art should receive more funding from the city.

“No one said, ‘Hey, I moved to Wilmington because I heard they have a really great sewer system,” Brawley said. “People move here because of the natural beauty and the cultural assets that we have here, and so I’m hopeful that some of the programs that Creative Wilmington initiated will be continued in the future.”

Creative Wilmington says there will be one more round of pedestrian art sculptures on display. Its website will not take new subscribers, but current members can continue to post for another year.
