Asbestos found in NHC Public Defender’s office

New Hanover County (WWAY-TV) — Access to the former New Hanover County Administration Building, located at 320 Chestnut Street will remain closed to the public until further notice due to on-going abatement of damage sustained with last week’s water loss.

During removal of water damaged material, a section of asbestos wrapping became dislodged. Additional air quality sampling is being conducted from samples taken throughout the building.

The building was closed last week due to water loss on the sixth floor. The building houses the Public Defender’s Office, Guardian ad Litem and Community Service Work Program. Citizens who need to contact the Public Defender should call 910-520-1558. Community Service Work Program clients should report to room 320 in the New Hanover County Judicial Building at 314 Princess Street. Volunteers with the Guardian ad Litem program can continue to contact staff as usual.
