Ashley High senior battles beach pollution
An Ashley High School senior is doing her part to fight beach pollution.
Seventeen-year-old Megan Butterfield organized a group of her friends to clean up Carolina Beach. The teenagers put on their rubber gloves and spent their Saturday morning digging for trash and cigarette butts in the sand.
The effort was part of Butterfield’s senior project that examined beach pollution and it’s affect on the environment. Butterfield says she’s learned that everyone can help make a difference.
“When they come to the beach and they bring drinks and food, just bring along a trash bag so you can put it in there when you’re done,” Butterfield said.
“Don’t put out your cigarettes in the sand and leave them there,” she added. “At least pick them up, take them with you and throw them in a trash can nearby.”
Butterfield’s senior project also requires her to write a ten page paper and make a speech on the subject of beach pollution.
