Authorities find wreckage of stolen airplane

GRAHAM, NC (AP) — Authorities are searching for survivors after an airplane that was reported stolen from a Chapel Hill airport crashed in Alamance County.

Spokesman Randy Young of the department of public safety at the University of North Carolina said the single-engine Piper Saratoga was stolen from Horace Williams Airport between 9 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m.Tuesday.

Officials say there was no one in or around the wreckage, which was found near NC Highway 87 near Graham, which is about 60 miles west of Raleigh.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said blood was found in the cockpit.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane is owned by LFW Investments of Hillsborough. There was no telephone listing for the company, and the plane’s owner, identified as Larry Warren, couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.
