Azalea Belles pick out dresses for upcoming festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Preparation is already underway for one of the biggest festivals of the year. Azalea Belles spent the weekend picking out their 1860s inspired dress that they will wear during the upcoming festivities.

Dressmaker Kay Godwin says most of the dresses are remakes from prom and wedding dresses. Some are even made from table cloth and bed comforters.

She said her mother started this traditional back in 1969 and Kay took over in 1992.

She says altered more than 1000 dresses over the years with 40 to 50 dresses each year.

“I love it,” Godwin said. “No matter what size the girl is she looks beautiful in these dresses.”

“Every one of my dresses are named after the first girl who wears it and I have two new ones that can be named this year,” Godwin said.

Three local dressmakers create the dresses which will be worn by more than 100 area high schoolers.

Azalea festival festivities will start April 6 and last through April 10.
