WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Size does not matter when it comes to gardening, and the garden on 209 Cavalier Drive proves it. You can see for yourself on the Azalea Garden Tour this weekend.

Garden owner Marie Douglas effectively uses a limited amount of space to plant camellias, azaleas and ferns. She even added a fireplace. It all mixes with brick and brush to create an organized escape from the city. A sturdy wooden fence keeps the garden hidden from the road.

“Every season the plants change,” Douglas said. “I just enjoy going to all of the nurseries, and if I see something new, I’ll find a new home for it.”

Douglas says gardening is therapeutic for her. She hopes visitors walk away with innovative ideas for small spaces.

The Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Garden Tour runs Friday through Sunday around Wilmington.
