AZALEA GARDEN TOUR: Skavroneck Garden

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast on South 4th Street in Wilmington doubles as an eclectic garden escape and a hot wedding spot. You can check it out on this weekend’s Azalea Garden Tour.

Garden owner Steven Skavroneck tends to its 50 mature camellia bushes, which are all more than 85 years old. The garden was previously owned by Camellia Society founder Henry MacMillan and also features many azaleas, fatsias and citrus plants. Skavroneck added potted plants in particular to give the garden a relaxed theme.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Skavroneck said. “It looks formal to start with, but Wilmington is known for its informal gardens; its quirky gardens compared to Charleston or Savannah. That’s the feeling that we’re going for here.”

Skavroneck hopes visitors leave his garden with ideas and a renewed sense of order. Order that he says demands anything but structure.

The Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Garden Tour runs Friday through Sunday around Wilmington.
