Baby’s imminent birth diverts jet flight to North Carolina
GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — A pregnant woman aboard an Atlanta-bound jet had to make an unscheduled stop in North Carolina to deliver her baby after her water broke in mid-flight and the plane was diverted.
Shaniqua Cherry was met on the tarmac at Piedmont Triad International Airport Tuesday by an ambulance waiting to take her to a hospital. But the baby didn’t wait, and Cherry delivered as she was on her way to Women’s Hospital of Greensboro.
The 24-year-old Cherry and her 7-pound daughter, Nylah, were doing fine on Wednesday.
Cherry said they were on their way from Minneapolis to Atlanta to be with her ailing mother.
American Airlines says the flight, which originated in Philadelphia, resumed shortly after Cherry was taken off the plane and arrived in Atlanta shortly before 3 p.m.
