Bags no longer allowed at Columbus County Schools athletic events
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Bags are no longer allowed at athletic events within the Columbus County School district.
In a social media post on Monday afternoon, the school district announced bags would no longer be permitted at athletic events. This includes bookbags and pocketbooks.
In addition, standing is no longer allowed. All spectators must remain seated.
A spokesman for Columbus County Schools shared the following statement.
“This policy was not implemented in direct response to a specific event. Our ongoing commitment to enhancing the safety of our facilities led us to identify this precautionary measure. Additionally, certain schools had already implemented bag restrictions, so we made the decision to extend this policy universally across all schools in order to be consistent and prevent confusion.”
On January 5, there was an incident at West Columbus High School during the varsity boy’s basketball game versus Whiteville High School. Following the incident, the game was paused and the gym was cleared. The game resumed later that night, but no fans were admitted back into the gym.
