Bald Head crews turn up skeletons

Construction workers renovating a golf course at Bald Head Island last week turned up two human skeletons. The bones are believed to be from the 1800s.

The bones were discovered last week. Bald Head Island officials believe the golf course was a burial site dating back to the 19th century. The bodies were laid in the same direction with their arms folded across their chests, which is why they don’t think foul play is a factor.

Now they wonder what else is under the site.

“The contractors working on the golf course unearthed them while they were moving the dirt around,” Bald Head Island Assistant Village Manager Chris McCall said. “As you can see there’s a considerable amount of dirt that’s been moved, and through that process, just luck that they actually saw it, instead of picking it up and burying it again.”

Public safety officials removed the remains and put them in a secure location on the island. State archeologists are investigating the bones and the burial site starting tomorrow. The investigation could last up to two weeks. The golf course renovation project is on hold until then.

We do know that both skeletons are male. The folks at Bald Head think there could be more remains still in the ground.
