Bald Head Island having record sea turtle nesting season

Bald Head Island is proud of having the best sea turtle nesting season in nine years.

Loggerhead sea turtles are listed as a threatened species by the endangered species act.

Members of Bald Head Island Conservancy are on their way to revitalizing the sea turtle population.

They currently have 98 sea turtle nests on the beach.

It takes 25 years in the ocean, after they hatch to make it back on land.

Senior naturalist Maureen Dewire said, “It’s conceivable to think, here we are in our 25th anniversary, and we’ve been protecting them for 25 years, so maybe those first babies that we helped get to the ocean, maybe they are coming back this year, its just a nice positive thought.”
