Battlefield provides history lesson

Moores Creek National Battlefield in Pender County not only represents a piece of history, but a vital part of our community.

“The people that fought in this battle, their relatives still live here and we have that story to tell. We want to make sure people outside of the community, outside of Pender County, know that as well,” said Tyrone Brandyburg.

Tyrone Brandyburg is the superintendent of the battlefield and says everyday brings the chance to learn. “Without knowing your history and your past how are you going to move towards a future?”

The battle at Moores Creek signified the Patriots independence from the king.

Despite the recession, the battlefield is holding its own. Many parks are struggling to stay staffed and funded for research and operation, but Brandyburg says you can’t put a price tag on learning. “You can’t beat hands on versus reading out of a book.”

Pender County will have it’s annual 4th of July parade next weekend and those at the battlefield invite all of you to come out and spend a day in history.
