Battleship gets $200,000 grant for repairs

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Battleship North Carolina is getting a big grant to go toward the millions of dollars needed to repair its aging and rusting hull.

The National Park Service and Maritime Administration announced this week $2.6 million in Maritime Heritage Program grants for projects that teach about and preserve sites and objects related to the nation’s maritime history. The Battleship NC will get $200,000 of that money. That’s the largest single amount awarded.

Earlier this month the Battleship announced it is still about $6 million short of its $17 million fundraising goal to repair the hull of the state’s World War II memorial or risk losing the ship to the scrapheap.
