Beach leaders meet to talk future

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Federal and state funding for beach renourishment and other projects are dwindling. Local leaders are forced to find a way to make up for that money.

This morning leaders from Carolina, Kure, and Wrightsville Beach, along with representatives Michael Lee, Susie Hamilton, Ted Davis, and New Hanover County Commission candidate Rob Zapple met to discuss the future of the beach communities.

Beach leaders want the county to step in and help pay for projects. They say their beaches are a main draw to the area so the cost for maintaining them should be more evenly spread.

“We all benefit from these beaches. To a degree it’s like roads or schools or anything else. We all benefit from them,” said Carolina Beach Mayor Dan Wilcox.

Wilcox said beach leaders have talked about several ways to bring in money. One idea is adding a meal tax.

Leaders meet again in January.
