Beating the heat with ice cream
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear has been in the 90s since Friday. Monday, Wilmington reached 97, which was the hottest day so far this year.
A heat advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. and you can likely expect this heat advisory trend to continue. These are issued when the heat index values are in the uncomfortable 100s, so these describe what it feels like outside.
It is recommend to cool off in a/c and staying out of the sun or limiting your time in the sun.
Some are flocking to the beach and others are eating there way to a cool down at ice cream shops like Squigley’s.
“I like Squigley’s,” Camden Jousma, a resident, said.
“The ice cream is delicious,” Riley Jousma, Camden’s sister, said.
“You can’t get any better ice cream than this,” Vaugus Hall, a frequent customer, said. “You just want to lick your cup.”
Some call it a Carolina Beach staple and, in the summer time, “a refreshing treat.”
“Just last week, under the coronavirus, they lined up all the way around the corner to get in here,” Hall said.
Hall says he’s been a fan of “Squigley’s Ice Cream and Treats” for nearly 15 years and, now, is no different. The store is named for it’s patented machine that mixes baked treats, candies and fruits with your chosen ice cream.
“This ice cream like this little sundae here,” Hall said. “It was packed up this high and you get your monies worth. Everything in it is good, delicious, nuts, walnuts.”
But, some experts say, although it may seem logical to eat or drink something cold in the heat, it’s initial cooling effect doesn’t last and believe it or not they recommend warm beverages, which sounds hard to swallow, when it’s melting outside.
