Becker Building Company celebrates with a sale
A local business is celebrating its 90th anniversary. It has stood the test of time from the end of World War I until now.
At its new location off River Road in Wilmington, the Becker Building Company has shifted with the times, while remaining a small, local business that hopes to continue its success into the future.
As you walk through the warehouse of Becker Building Company in Wilmington, you would never know it’s been around nearly a hundred years. That is because this small, family run business has had to keep up with the changing times.
Scott Gales bought the building supply company in February of 2007 from the Freeman family.
He remembers visiting Beckers as a kid at its first location on Surry Street, back when the company used to publish black and white cartoon ads in the newspaper.
Gales isn’t worried about how the nation’s economic hardships might affect his business. Instead, he sees a bright future. “Because you are an independent, local business, you can maneuver your overhead to absorb some economic hardship. Any business that provides a service to the general public, and a lot of times that’s what gets displaced in big corporate stores is taking the time to find out exactly what the builder and homeowner needs.”
The staff at Beckers is almost like a family. Employees say that small business feel is what keeps customers coming back. “The general public or anyone can walk in and feel at home,” said Danny Isabell, general manager.
There will be a supply sale along with food and entertainment Friday and Saturday from 8 to 3 o’clock at their store location located at 101 Portwatch Way off River Road.
