Bell Tower Glows for More Than Just Veterans
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Memorial Bell Tower at North Carolina
State University was first dedicated as a monument to alumni killed
in World War One.
Now it glows for the school’s most cherished moments, such as
basketball team wins.
Some say it’s wrong for the school to give the same red-light
honor to the men’s basketball squad as the troops killed in war.
The 115-foot tower has a plaque that shows the names of 33
alumni killed in World War One. The school lights the tower red in
honor of Veterans Day and in December to honor the anniversary of
the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
But veterans note that the school’s Fulbright scholars and
successful athletes get the same tribute _ and they get it more
frequently.
Former Chancellor Marye Anne Fox first decided in 1998 to light
the Memorial Bell Tower to celebrate athletic achievements and
sports victories.
