Berger drives to court on suspended license, case continued

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger had his court case for a DWI charge continued this morning. Berger is due back in court April 24.

Wilmington Police arrested Berger in downtown Wilmington on December 18 around 2 a.m. after they say he made an abrupt left turn in the 200 Block of Market Street. Lab tests revealing Berger’s blood alcohol level was 0.08, which is above the legal limit.

Berger drove to court this morning. A Sheriff’s Office spokesman says Berger’s license is suspended. The Clerk of Court’s office says there is a possibility that Berger was issued a “paper license” in court today that would allow him to drive for the time being, but there is not yet any record that that has happened.

Berger told WWAY after a commission meeting last month that he had had three beers and a shot before he was arrested, but believes that a combination of prescription drugs made him appear more intoxicated.

Berger said he plans to fight the charge.
