BHI bones buried at site of Confederate fort
Archaeologists from Fort Fisher are studying the human bones found on Bald Head Island. The scientists say the burial site is within the boundaries of Fort Holmes, a Confederate base during the Civil War.
The three bodies were buried where the seventh green of the Bald Head Island Club golf course is now. Construction workers found the first two bodies while renovating the golf course. WWAY’s Hailey Winslow accidentally stumbled upon a third skeleton Friday.
Archaeologists believe the bones date back to the 1800s.
