Bill shows McCrory seeking to borrow up to $3B for projects

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory is proposing the legislature authorize up to $3 billion in debt to pay for scores of road projects and government and campus building construction should North Carolina voters agree to borrow the amounts this fall.

A bill filed Thursday by House budget-writers identified by one sponsor as the text of McCrory’s budget proposal includes details of proposed bond packages the governor announced earlier this year.

The bill requests up to $1.5 billion in highway bonds and $1.5 billion in infrastructure bonds. The amounts are slightly higher than what McCrory has discussed. According to the bill, each grouping of debt would be subject to a statewide vote in either October or November.

The legislation filed Thursday itemizes projects McCrory’s administration would like to complete using the debt.
