Kamy Smelser joined WWAY in September 2025 as a multimedia journalist. Since joining the team, she has covered major events such as the devastating Southport mass shooting in October 2025, which took the lives of three victims. Kamy has also focused on the various environmental events in the area such as ghosts forests, beach erosion and major flooding.
Before joining the WWAY team, she was a digital reporter, streaming CTV host and community affairs director at FOX 2 News in St. Louis, Missouri for two and a half years. Kamy graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2022 with a bachelor’s in journalism. During her time in school, she interned at NBC 5 Chicago in the station’s investigative unit. She was also staff reporter and news editor for her school’s newspaper, The Columbia Chronicle. She received first place for her editorial work from the Illinois College Press Association in 2022. She additionally interned with Modern Luxury Magazine and Gateway Journalism Review during college.
When Kamy is not at work, she enjoys going to the beach with her dog, Winnie and exploring Wilmington. She also enjoys serving on her church’s production team, spending time with her friends and playing pickleball.
Kamy is excited to be living on the East Coast after spending her life in the Midwest. She’s loves learning more about the area and the people who keep it moving.
