Black History Month: The history of Bellamy Mansion

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Amanda Fitzpatrick sat down with Executive Director of Bellamy Museum Gareth Evans to talk about the History of Bellamy Mansion.

Evans told us that that The Bellamy site features a mansion and slave quarters that housed 9 enslaved people in 1861. There are very few examples of interpreted urban slave quarters anywhere and we have the opportunity to examine the lives of all those who lived here through our tours and research. We see 28,000 visitors in a year, including much of the County’s 5th grade. They learn about life in the South at the time of the Civil War and beyond. We have tours and educational programming all year and Black History month can help to highlight that particular piece of the American story.
