Bladen Co. man arrested after Fayetteville standoff

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Bladen County man who was the subject of a Silver Alert late last week was arrested yesterday after a standoff in Cumberland County.

Fayetteville Police say they responded to a report of a burglary at about 1:22 a.m. Sunday. They say their investigation revealed an unknown white male, later identified as Darryl Reed Hester Jr., 54, of Bladenboro, had broken in a house on Maffitt Court, where the residents confronted him. Police say Hester left the house and fire a round from a pistol into the ground as he left. Witnesses then say him go into a home on Morganton Road.

Officers surrounded that house and tried to make contact with Hester, but they say he would not respond. After confirming the people who lived in the house were safe, police decided to negotiate with Hester. The standoff lasted until about 2:30 p.m. when Hester walked out and surrendered after police agreed to give him cigarettes and a turkey sandwich that he asked for, according to WTVD in Raleigh.

WTVD also reports the police chief says this is the fourth time Hester has been involved in a situation like this.

Police charged Hester with first-degree burglary, breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is in the Cumberland County Jail under $200,000 bond.
