Welcome to August! Where’s the heat??

Well it certainly was an interesting way to welcome in one of the most sweltering months of the year. Our sometimes soggy, socked-in, Sunday held high temperatures down to the low 80s – even upper 70s (yes 70s) in some locations!

 "Cool" Sunday High (ºF)
Wilmington, NC 81
Whiteville, NC 82
Southport, NC 79
Fayetteville, NC 80

Taking a look at the numbers, it’s impressive to see this kind of a "cool" day here in the middle of summer. In fact, it was the coolest day since June 1st in Wilmington. The high fell short of our average by 9 degrees – something rarely seen in the mid-summer when we see such little variation in highs and lows.

But alas, the brief respite from the heat and humidity will not – and cannot – continue forever. Our old friend the Bermuda High will get its act together in the coming days setting up a return flow out of the south and east, ushering in the sulty southern breezes back into the Cape Fear region.

If you enjoyed the short and sweet cool spell, I’m with you there. If not, you can put away your sweaters and get ready to bake again. The heat index will rise above 100 later this week.
