New Hanover County Commissioners approve retirement community

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On Monday, the New Hanover County Commissioners voted four to one to rezone property off of Blue Clay Road in order to allow New Beginning Christian Church to build a retirement community.

The Commissioners’ biggest concern was who will maintain the roads around the area.

Organizers said that the church owner will take care of them and ensure they are up to DOT standards.

Pastor Robert Campbell said that today’s approval came as a great relief.

“It’s not over. But it’s a big, big step. Our county has changed its attitude about affordable housing. The county commissioners, I think, were fair, and they made a positive decision today to impact our community. And I’m very grateful for that,” he said.

The next step for the church is to submit an application to the state and wait for approval. Once that has passed, it will then begin building.
