Body found in Cape Fear River identified

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body in the Cape Fear River Sunday. The surprising discovery happened several hours before thousands of people packed in to Downtown Wilmington to see the city’s 4th of July fireworks show.

A Wilmington Fire Department boat helped pull the body out. Police have identified the victim as 26-year-old Joanne Dacuno. Investigators at this time are still trying to figure out just how the Greenville resident ended up in the water.

So far police officials say there is no signs of injury to Dacuno’s body. Her autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
