Boehner shunned by 2 NC House members for speaker’s post
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Two House Republicans from North Carolina declined to support John Boehner for a third term as speaker.
Tuesday’s televised roll call for the speaker’s election had Reps. Walter Jones from the 3rd District and Mark Meadows of the 11th District each voting for Rep. Daniel Webster of Florida. Webster received the most votes from about 25 GOP defections to someone other than Boehner, who still won the speaker’s job.
Jones is a veteran congressman from Greenville who has bucked party leaders in the past voting against GOP budgets or opposing the Iraq war.
Meadows is in his second term. The Jackson County resident is considered a tea party favorite who helped pressure Boehner in 2013 to link the extension of government operations to defunding President Barack Obama’s health care law.
