Boil water advisory issued for parts of Dawson Street and surrounding areas

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, April 20, affecting approximately 115 customers in parts of Wilmington while crews complete water system repairs.
The advisory comes as utility crews work to replace broken water valves in the area. Officials say customers may experience temporary service interruptions during the repair work.
The advisory area includes all of the Hillcrest Community, the 1100 through 1600 blocks of Dawson Street, the 700 block of South 14th Street, the 800 block of South 15th Street, the 1400 block of Wooster Street, and the 900 and 1000 blocks of South 16th Street.
CFPUA officials say periods of low, or no water pressure can increase the risk of contamination due to potential back siphonage, which is why the precautionary advisory is being issued.
During the advisory, residents are instructed to boil tap water for at least one minute and allow it to cool before using it for drinking or consumption purposes. Bottled water may also be used as an alternative.
Officials note that boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation, washing fruits and vegetables, pet consumption, and preparing baby formula. Water does not need to be boiled for bathing or showering.
Once repairs are complete, CFPUA lab staff will test water samples to confirm it is safe before lifting the advisory.
