BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — A unique piece of coastal North Carolina’s natural heritage will take center stage this weekend as CBS Sunday Morning highlights the story of the iconic Venus flytrap, with a focus on efforts rooted in Boiling Spring Lakes.

According to Boiling Spring Lakes Parks and Recreation, the segment will air Sunday, April 26 at 9 a.m., showcasing the rare carnivorous plant that is native to the Carolinas and increasingly at risk in the wild.

The feature, reported by correspondent Seth Doane, follows conservationists working to protect the Venus flytrap, a species long known for its striking appearance and unusual feeding habits. Despite its global recognition, the plant’s natural population has declined due to habitat loss.

The segment includes insight from botanist Julie Moore, who has dedicated much of her life to preserving the species, and Damon Waitt, director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Waitt discusses the plant’s distinctive characteristics—so remarkable that Charles Darwin once described the Venus flytrap as “the most interesting plant in the world.”

Viewers are encouraged to tune in to learn more about the plant’s legacy and the ongoing efforts to ensure its survival for future generations.
