Boiling Spring Lakes family survives after run-in with two horses

We all know the hazards of deer on our local highways, especially at night. But Tuesday evening a local woman had a terrifying run-in with a pair of horses.

Not much is left of the Forte family car after hitting two horses around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Leigh Ann Forte and her two sons were traveling down Highway 87 on their way home to Boiling Spring Lakes when the horses walked out into the road. Both horses were killed after being smashed into the car and through the windshield.

Forte said she is lucky to be alive, with only bumps and bruises. “Looking back at the car and looking at my kids, we are really lucky. It wasn’t our time. I’m grateful, truly grateful that we are all alive.”

Police are trying to contact the horses’ owner.

Police told the family they may have come from a farm three miles off Highway 87.
