Bolivia man pleads guilty to statutory rape, faces more than 27 years in prison


BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — A Bolivia man could spend more than 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to statutory rape in Brunswick County today.

District Attorney Jon David announced Douglas Len Burris, 29, pleaded guilty to one count each of statutory rape and statutory rape or sex offense during a plea hearing. Superior Court Judge Tanya Wallace sentenced Burris to between 19 to 27 years and 10 months. Burris must also register as a sex offender when he gets out of prison.

Burris was accused of raping two girls between the ages of 13 and 15 in June and Sept. 2014.

The DA’s Office says Burris and four other co-defendants were charged in the case. Three of the co-defendants were active duty military members at the time of the incident. Each of the three co-defendants were prosecuted in military court and received active prison sentences.
