Breaking and entering suspect caught after crashing getaway car twice

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An apartment owner arrived home tonight to find his apartment completely destroyed and an unknown suspect inside according to police.

According to Wilmington Police Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay, the owner of the apartment left immediately when he realized the suspect was still in his residence. He called police at 7:22 Friday night to report the breaking and entering.

Police say the suspect, a black male wearing a grey hoodie, got into a black Honda and fled the scene. He crashed into another car at the intersection of Independence and Malpass.

The suspect fled the scene of the crash in his vehicle when he crashed again according to police. After the second accident he fled on foot. SABLE and the K-9 Unit were sent out to look for him.

He was seen by witnesses jumping backyard fences on Malpass.

According to police, SABLE was able to keep a light on him and he was caught by the K-9 Unit at 8:00 Friday night. He is now in custody. There were no injuries from the break in or either car accidents.

His identity has not yet been released.
