Bridge closure causes some Oak Island businesses to suffer
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The G.V. Barbee Bridge to Oak Island closed in October for repairs, and people on the island are ready to see it reopen.
There are two bridges, but one them has been closed for about four months now while the North Carolina Department of Transportation makes some improvements.
Some businesses like Russell’s Place and Old Bridge Diner have suffered from it.
G.V. Barbee is the bridge that most customers and staff members use when they make the trip over to Oak Island but due to the construction and closures, they’ve had to make other arrangements.
Russell’s staff says that business hasn’t been impacted by the closures, but it’s been tough on their employees. “We’re looking forward to it opening right on back up, just for even us to get back and forth,” said Chef Christine “Cricket” Hunt.
What was originally a five minute drive for their employees now takes up to 30 minutes using the Swain’s Cut Bridge.
Michael Jones, the owner of Old Bridge Diner and Doodle’s Convenience Store says that business has definitely decreased, but that they have a loyal following that has continued to show their support.
According to NCDOT, the G.V. Barbee Bridge is expected to reopen by Easter.
