Brigade Boys & Girls Club gets a greenhouse

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An organization that helps veterans and families of veterans work on projects in the community is helping out at the Brigade Boys & Girls Club.

Thumos Project and Lowe’s Home Improvement are working together to build a greenhouse at the Brigade Boys & Girls Club.

Volunteers were out Wednesday putting together the 128 square foot greenhouse.

The greenhouse will be an integral part of the “Clean Garden for Kids” project, a hands-on educational program launched at the Brigade site in 2014.

“Right now around July we’re going to go ahead and start preparing for our Fall so that these kids can go ahead and see a full cycle of what it is to actually grow seasonally,” said Jose Herrera, Thumos Project CEO and a Brigade Boys & Girls Club staff member.

The construction of the greenhouse is expected to take one or two days to complete.

“Clean Gardens for Kids” aims to teach children how to grow and harvest produce, learn about healthier foods, and even local food economies.
