FIRST ON 3: Brunswick Co. families scramble after school childcare program canceled
BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) – With just days to go before the school year starts, some families in Brunswick County are scrambling to find childcare after a program run at several schools was canceled.
WWAY has learned parents got messages today from Communities in Schools Brunswick County that the organization had to cancel its before and after school programs. The school year starts Monday.
“The rationale was low enrollment and not wanting to start the year and then close the program a couple of weeks after the start of school,” Brunswick County School’s spokeswoman Jessica Swencki told WWAY.
According to its website, CIS provides morning and afternoon care at Belville, Southport and Town Creek elementary schools and after school care at Cedar Grove and Shallotte middle schools.
WWAY has reached out to contacts listed on the CIS website for the program as well as a Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman, but we have yet to hear back.
