Brunswick Co. program helped 60+ students attend college for free

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Dozens of students in Brunswick County are getting a free ride in college thanks to a program leaders say they hope will continue.

County commissioners and Brunswick Community College Trustees got an update on the Brunswick Guarantee Program during a joint meeting Monday.

The program covers tuition and fees not covered by financial aid or scholarships for BCC students who graduated from a Brunswick County high school in 2016 or later with at least a 2.3 unweighted grade point average.

Commissioner Randy Thompson says the program has been successful so far and he hopes that it can continue in the future.

“We need to encourage our youth, we need to take advantage of every opportunity we can to extend the offer to them, and make sure that our growing families understand that the financial piece of all this is going to be taken care of,” Thompson said.

62 students got help paying for college in the Brunswick Guarantee’s first year, totaling more than $61,000 from the county.
