Brunswick Co. School Board reviews bond plan, teacher discusses school needs

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County School officials are continuing their push for a $152 million school bond. Tuesday,  the 2016 Bond Plan was presented to the school board.

It was the first time the administration saw the long range plan in its entirety. The plan included all the lists of recommended improvements for each school.

The school system is putting together a book of the planned improvements to help educate people.

School leaders said in anticipation of growth they are looking to make major expansion and technological improvements to all of the county schools.

Laura Sokol-Scott, a Leland Middle School social studies teacher, said she has already seen the need for more room.

“I have a pretty full room here with the number of students that fit within a classroom,” said Sokol-Scott.

She said students would benefit from more classroom space and technological advancements.

“There’s a big part of learning that needs to happen in the classroom but there’s another big part that needs to happen with a 21st century student needing that extra room, and access to technology that would be part of the bond,” said Sokol-Scott.

The 2016 Bond Plan includes more than $3 million for buildings and technology  improvements at Leland Middle School. And $24.5 million for a new middle school, Town Creek Middle School, which school officials said in the proposal, will alleviate overcrowding at Leland Middle School.

“I think without the bond we would struggle to meet some of the growth needs,” said Sokol-Scott.

Voters will have their chance to cast their vote on the bond in November.
