Brunswick County now offering free flu shots for adults who cannot afford one

BOLIVIA, N.C. (WWAY) -– Brunswick County Health Services is now offering free, low-contact flu shots for adults (aged 19 or older) who cannot afford one.

More than 1,500 people have already received their annual flu shot at the clinic since the program began in late September. The outdoor flu clinic allows individuals to receive their vaccine without leaving their vehicle. BCHS says most participants are in and out of the clinic within minutes.

“We don’t want people at risk for both COVID-19 and the flu,” Health Services Director Cris Harrelson said. “We are taking this step to ensure those who might not get a flu shot due to cost concerns have access to one. We need everyone’s help us stop the spread of the flu while we also work to combat the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.”

Children younger than five years, adults 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with underlying medical conditions are all at an increased risk of severe illness or complications from the flu. Annual flu vaccinations are recommended for everyone six months of age and older.

BCHS offers both regular flu vaccines and the high-dose version of the vaccine, the latter of which is recommended for people 65 years and older.

Participants are not required to bring documentation other than a copy of their photo ID and insurance cards, if available. They are encouraged to fill out their flu form.

This opportunity applies only for regular versions of the flu vaccine at the Brunswick County outdoor flu clinic at the Brunswick County Government Complex (30 Government Center Drive NE, Bolivia, 28422). Adults who want the high-dose flu vaccine are still required to purchase this version using one of the accepted methods of payment: cash, checks, Medicaid, Medicare, and most major insurance.
