Brunswick County Schools prepare for state-wide performance grades

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Next Friday, North Carolina Schools will receive their Performance Grades. Every school, excluding alternative schools, will be given an overall grade from A through F.

State-wide performance grades were enacted by the 2013-2014 General Assembly.

Jessica Swencki, Brunswick County School Executive Director of Quality Assurance and Community Engagement, says though grading school performance can be helpful in terms of looking at where to improve, the actual grading system is very narrow and limited.

“The way our letter grade is calculated, really is only one sliver of information about your child’s school. And that information really only takes into account a very narrow population of your child’s school,” Swencki said.

For elementary and middle schools, the end of the year grades in math and reading are looked at in only third through fifth grades, and science grades for fifth and eighth grades.

For high schools, math, English, biology, ACT scores, higher level career classes and graduation rates are looked at for grading.
