Brunswick County Schools to close May 16 for teacher rally

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools will close on May 16, the day public school teachers across North Carolina will descend on Raleigh to rally for teacher pay and other issues.

The district says 281 teachers have requested the day off. That day will now become an optional teacher workday. Students will not have to make the day up.

Early College High School will operate on a normal schedule Wednesday due to graduation the following Saturday and school activities that need to take place leading up to graduation.

Brunswick now joins New Hanover County, which announced yesterday it would also close schools because 600 teachers had requested the day off.

Thousands of teachers are expected to protest at the General Assembly when lawmakers reconvene for the legislative short session.
