Brunswick County to give away 1,000 smoke detectors

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Recent fire deaths have Brunswick County looking to do what it can to make homes safer.

On Saturday, March 28, Brunswick County Emergency Services and county fire departments are hosting a Smoke Alarm Rally. Volunteers will canvass the county to give away 1,000 smoke detectors. They’ll also test existing alarms and provide fire safety education.

Originally, the event was planned for one part of the county, but several deaths in fires recently in the county have led organizers to make it a countywide program.

“The goal of this event is to install 1,000 smoke alarms in at-risk homes throughout the county,” Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said in a news release. “We want to ensure that every home has a smoke alarms in it. This is also a way for us to honor those that we have tragically lost in these recent home fires. We want to save lives
by ensuring that residents can be quickly alerted of the need for escape when a fire occurs in their home.”

If you are concerned about the smoke alarm in your home or need one, call Brunswick County Emergency Services at (910) 253-5383 to schedule an appointment.
