Brunswick County brush fire erupts days after burning ban lift
BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Just days after the state lifted its burning ban a brush fire swept through about 50 acres of forest in Brunswick County.
Investigators say the fire started just before three Monday afternoon near Lakewood Estates off Ocean Isle Beach Road.
Fire crews evacuated about 15 homes. Those residents are now back home.
Seven fire departments and the North Carolina forestry were able to contain the fire.
Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said, “Forestry has got a line around the fire, they’ve got it contained and they’re going to continue working on it until they’ve got it well under control. It’s going to remain smoky in this area for quite a while.”
Fire officials say people with health problems should stay inside until the smoke clears Tuesday.
There’s no word yet on what caused the fire and there are no reported injuries.
