Brunswick County School Board fires five, changes transfer request policy

The Brunswick County School Board met Tuesday night and fired five South Brunswick High School employees. They were involved in leaving a developmentally disabled student behind during a field trip to Wilmington’s Greenfield Park last month.

With the addition of Town Creek Elementary School this fall and Cedar Grove Middle, the board also changed the transfer request policy. Because of the anticipated number of transfer requests, the deadline is now May 30th instead of June 30th.

“There are no words to describe what it’s like to open two new schools at one time especially when we have less money than we’ve ever had to deal with,” said Brunswick County Schools Superintendent Katie McGee. “So as difficult as a transfer is, it’s not as difficult as opening two new homes for a lot of kids and being on a very limited budget.”

The school board also recognized Shallotte Middle School teacher Daniel Richardson as Brunswick County’s Teacher of the Year.
