Buffett’s sister preaches philanthropy during Port City visit

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — She’s inherited millions of dollars, and now she is giving it all away. Some of the money will be invested right here in the Port City.

Doris Buffett is the sister of Warren Buffett, who made billions by investing his money in the stock market. Doris earned her claim to fame by investing her time, energy, and fortune in lending a helping hand to communities.

Buffett attended a luncheon in Wilmington today hosted by the Cape Fear Literacy Council. The philanthropist shook hands and talked about her book “Giving it all Away.”

Buffet used to live in Wilmington. She says she prefers to invest her money in towns where she has ties. That way both she and the people who live in that community know where the money is going. Buffett says it only takes one person to make a difference.

“We all have a part to play, and it really doesn’t matter whether you’re leading the charge or bringing up the rear,” Buffett said. “We can create a tsunami. That’s how I like to think of it, because it spreads out, and I see that happen in my life and my work all the time. It’s just astounding, and people pick it up. They like the idea of giving back and participating in life, and there’s never been a time when it’s more needed.”

Buffett also founded the Women’s Independent Scholarship Program right here in Wilmington. She says literacy is important and says she is looking forward to taking her message everywhere.
