Burgaw PD revives program to check on residents

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — The Burgaw Police Department is bringing back a program designed to check on members of the community.

The R U OK? Program calls residents who are homebound, senior citizens, living alone or would otherwise benefit from receiving a phone call from the Burgaw Police Department to check on their safety, security and welfare.

The applicants can request to be called Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Multiple calls per week are available if needed. If police are unable to reach the person by phone, an officer will be dispatched to the home to check on the person.

Burgaw Police Chief Jim Hock, who started earlier this summer, told WWAY last month he had plans to bring back the R U OK? Program.

“Elderly folk or family members of elderly folks can request that we give them a call,” Hock said. “It’s usually done once a week. We talk to them on the phone and make sure they are all right. If we’re not able to get them on the phone, we’ll have officers that will go by.”

Residents or relatives can pick up applications at the Burgaw Police Department at 109 N. Walker Street.

If you have questions or concerns, contact the police department at (910) 259-4924.
