Burgaw Middle School PTO demands explanation for principal’s suspension

To the School Board,

We the members of the Burgaw Middle School PTO are upset and confused by the suspension of Principal MD Coleman. Mr. Coleman has been an outstanding leader at BMS since his arrival in 2008. He has proved that he loves and is concerned about our children, and is providing them with a safe learning environment. Without regard for race, creed or religious background, he patrols BMS daily always on the lookout for anything that threatens the well-being of any child at the school. Not a one dimensional educator, he is equally concerned about their educational and physical well being. Last year’s test scores showed excellent improvement, across the board, over previous years. This is the direct result of his leadership and concern for the students at BMS.

It bothers us that our good principal would be suspended without any explanation for this action. We (Parents, teachers, and students) have worked hard at BMS to improve the negative image that the school had before his arrival. Mr. Coleman has been the biggest supporter of the PTO. He encourages parental involvement and listens to all our concerns. If a person can give 200% by going beyond the requirements of a job, he has done it and more.

Let’s recap the positives of this situation.

1. Mr. Coleman has his teachers excited about teaching.

2. He has garnered respect from his peers and those who work under him.

3. Students have a safe environment for learning free of distractions.

4. Zero tolerance for gang activity.

5. Increasing test scores.

6. Parental involvement. Parents have raised over $13,000 to benefit programs at the school.

As parents, we understand that there are situations that demand immediate action. However, as citizens and voters in Pender County, we are puzzled that no explanation has been given for removing Mr. Coleman as principal. Perhaps we have not been as vocal in our support as we should have been, so that the School Board recognizes that we see him as being an important part of the school, and unless a rationale for this action is forthcoming, we expect to see him reinstated as principal.

Respectfully,

Burgaw Middle School PTO &
Other Concerned Community Members
