Bush urges Mukasey’s confirmation

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Bush today again urged the Senate to confirm Michael Mukasey as attorney general.

The president spoke at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport this morning as he arrived for a fundraiser for Senator Lindsey Graham.

Bush will also speak about the war on terrorism at a basic training graduation at Fort Jackson this afternoon.

Bush says Mukasey is good, fair, independent and well qualified.

Mukasey has refused to talk about the legality of the interrogation procedure known as waterboarding as he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee that is considering his nomination.

Bush said yesterday the Justice Department would go without a leader in a time of war if Democrats block Mukasey’s nomination.

Graham is backing the nomination.
