Bush’s choice as AG may meet Democratic approval

CAPITOL HILL (AP) — Senate Democrats aren't objecting to President Bush's choice of retired judge Michael Mukasey to be attorney general.

In choosing Michael Mukasey for the job, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he believes the president listened to Congress and decided against a more partisan replacement for Alberto Gonzales.

But at least one Democrat — Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy — is threatening to put off confirmation hearings until the White House answers questions about the firings of federal prosecutors.

The Judiciary Committee's ranking Republican, Arlen Specter, says the Senate should not get "bogged down" by setting preconditions.
