Businesses prepare for ‘last hurrah’ of summer

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Labor Day weekend is here, but how are businesses in the beach areas preparing?

With the end of summer approaching fast, vacation spots like Carolina Beach are seeing their final round of vacationers.

But they want to end the summer on a high note during the Labor Day weekend.

“I’m very excited, I’m hoping that we have a good weekend,” Squigley’s Ice Cream and Treats Owner, Ann Coen said.

Many business owners on the island are preparing for what they hope is a busy holiday.

“Labor Day is sort of our last hurrah, and we look forward to it. I can’t lie about that, but we are anxious to see all the new vacationers come down and by the looks of things, as I look outside my store, it does look like there are a lot of people here. A lot of cars, a lot of traffic,” Coen said.

While some businesses are ordering more supplies, some are having mark downs to get rid of their older goods.

“We’re having a tent sale this weekend to get rid of all our product from the past season and kind of kick off the school year,” CB Surf Shop employee Daniel Russell said.

Meanwhile another buisness is already in full swing.

“This is not by any means the end of our season for us, so it’s great. It’s like a last hurrah,” HopLite Irish Pub owner, Ron Stevens said.

It is a ‘last hurrah’ of summer for many, but for those who are still on the island all year say it is important to continue to support local business.

“We want everybody to shop local, to stay on the island and eat at our fabulous restaurants, and eat our doughnuts, and have our ice cream. It’s really important to us,” Coen said.

As the summer heat fizzles down, these businesses hope they stay busy.
