Businesses say Front Street work hurting bottom line

Front Street construction is causing headaches for more than just drivers. It’s created a bump in the road for businesses as well. Fewer customers have translated into more discounts at stores.

One business owner says the construction has nearly closed her shop. The strategy is to sell what she can, for less, hoping to attract shoppers.

Shops have been forced to discount items to try and stay in the black. At Flashbax on Front, Alyssa Bauman is offering 25 percent off everything in her store. She says all the businesses on the block have taken a huge hit because of the construction. Her shop included.

“I’ve got to do whatever I can do right now to stay in business,” Bauman said, “so if I have to give everything away at 25 percent off, you know, it’s better than closing down.”

This is the first phase of the Front Street Project affecting Front Street between Market and Princess Streets. The next phase will span from Princess to Chestnut.

The project started in January should be complete by august. Business owners say that’s a long time to hang on.
